300 Sketches

These are the 300 sketches I created for the Design 100 assignment on my iPad using the Procreate app. These sketches are of various objects that spontaneously came to mind or of things that were around me as I was doing the assignment.

I had initially lacked confidence in my drawing abilities and as I lacked interest in sketching, I found the journey difficult and unenjoyable, however through practice and time, this process significantly enhanced my skills. I managed to discover effective methods to improve in line control, three-dimensional drawing, and techniques for adding light and shadow which were before my weaknesses.

Although I prefer realistic drawings, I acknowledged that my skills were not yet at that level therefore I leaned towards including rough sketching, graffiti-inspired styles, and old-school drawings in my work.

Overall, this experience not only helped me enhance my drawing skills yet also encouraged me to build interest in sketching and appreciating the different unique styles in design. Each sketch served as a steppingstone towards developing my artistic voice.

1~50
On this page, my favourite sketch is number 27 because after drawing this sketch, my confidence in drawing cylindrical objects increased significantly and I figured out effective ways to express details.
My least favourite one is number 13 as when drawing the controller which combines circular and diamond shapes, I had not yet learned how to draw it three-dimensionally, therefore I was unhappy with the unclear shapes and lines.
51~110
In this page my favourite sketch is 105 as despite the inclusion of unusual shapes which was relatively hard to draw, I was happy with the result of the sketch, especially how I managed to draw the lines in one go without straining my arms. The shapes and details were self-satisfactory, and the style of the art is my personal favourite.

111~170
On this page, my favourite one is number 153.
This is because it is a much more realistic depiction than number 27 on the first page, and the detailed parts and shadows of three-dimensional objects are expressed very well. I was waiting for an appointment when I sketched this, so although I was not in a suitable environment to draw, I was satisfied with the quality of the sketch.
My least favourite sketch is number 167. I tried to draw a piercing, but it was too small, and I didn't know how to draw the details of small objects as well as focusing on the little shapes, therefore I was not satisfied with the result.
171~226
I was very satisfied with drawing a three-dimensional skull in detail. Although it took the longest time among all the sketches, the quality of the drawing was high, and my confidence enhanced. The deep, protruding shadows and other details were expressed well.
Overall, this is a piece that I really like.
My least favourite sketch is number 225. I tried to draw a container and the shadow of it to express the 3-dimensional nature however, it was difficult, and I missed a lot of details to achieve this.
228~264
My favourite sketch is 258 as the reflection of the light, clean lines and colours are simple yet high quality. On this page I like number 260 as well as I think it is a sketch work that is most similar to what I think of as a ‘sketch’. I also think that the wrinkles on the clothes and the box were expressed neatly.
My least favourite one is 261. If only the shadow expressions and lines had been cleaner, I might have liked it more, however those parts were lacking therefore, the overall quality dropped significantly.
265~300
On this page, my favourite one is number 265. The reason I like it the most is similar to number 258 on the previous page. This is because the combination of clean black and white and clean lines is my personal favourite drawing style.
My least favourite one is number 268. I tried to draw the Toyota logo, but I couldn't express Toyota's unique simple yet detailed circle shape well, so even though it was a simple sketch, the quality was poor.

I realized that the method of completing a single line by drawing short lines is not good (except in some genres), and I realised how much influence the movement of the wrist and elbow has when drawing. In addition, I learned how to draw three-dimensional objects in addition to 2D ones while considering the size, angle, and shape of objects.

While working on the assignment and through various research, I learned about sketch genres that I had not encountered before, and as I drew them one by one, not only my interest in drawing yet confidence also increased significantly. Although my drawing skills still lack, this assignment was helpful as it was a great opportunity for me to experience drawing many things in a relatively short time therefore, I learning to time management and realising that a "sketch" is not the final piece of work thus should not take too long.  Furthermore, I was able to clearly understand my strengths and weaknesses and most importantly encouraged me to believe that over time, my drawing skills can improve with practice.
